BSI Racing Welcomes Lanie Buice, Spencer Bucknum and Gianni Maiuro to Mazda MX-5 Cup at VIR

Championship contender Bobby Gossett leads expanded BSI Racing lineup as three drivers make the next step in their development

EDGEWATER, Fla. – August 18, 2026 – BSI Racing will bring an exciting mix of championship contention and emerging talent to the upcoming Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin rounds at Virginia International Raceway, welcoming Lanie Buice, Spencer Bucknum and Gianni Maiuro to the series alongside current championship contender Bobby Gossett.

The expanded lineup reinforces BSI Racing’s commitment to creating opportunities for drivers from different racing disciplines to take the next step in their careers through one of North America’s most competitive development series.

Leading the charge is Bobby Gossett in the No. 44 Salty Dog Racing BSI machine, who enters VIR sitting second in the Drivers’ Championship and just 160 points out of the lead. With the championship battle intensifying, Gossett and BSI remain firmly focused on bringing home another Mazda MX-5 Cup title.

Joining Gossett at VIR is Lanie Buice, one of Chevrolet’s rising young development drivers. The 19-year-old has been competing full-time in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series while making select ARCA Menards Series starts in 2026. Buice earned a breakthrough TA2 Western Championship victory at Sonoma earlier this season and has continued building an increasingly diverse resume across road-course and oval competition.

Spencer Bucknum also joins the BSI lineup, piloting the No. 6 Ply Driver Development BSI entry. Bucknum, a third-generation American racing driver carving his own path toward the top ranks of motorsports brings experience spanning from Formula Pro USA F4 West Coast Championship to SRO’s TC America.

Rounding out the newcomers is Gianni Maiuro in the No. 28 BSI Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup car. Maiuro comes to the series after building his racing foundation in SCCA Spec Miata, making MX-5 Cup a natural next step in his progression through the Mazda racing ladder.

The newcomers join an established BSI Racing lineup that also includes Ellie Gossett, Julian DaCosta and Christian Hodneland.

Ellie Gossett continues her rookie MX-5 Cup campaign with BSI Racing, gaining valuable experience throughout her first season of professional competition and continuing to build pace and racecraft within the highly competitive field.

Julian DaCosta returns to the BSI lineup in the No. 95, having already demonstrated strong speed during the 2026 season. DaCosta earned Hard Charger and Fastest Lap honors at Mid-Ohio, with his performance also putting him on pole for the following race.

Christian Hodneland continues his development with BSI Racing in the No. 32, building experience throughout the 2026 MX-5 Cup season and earning recognition with the series’ Takumi Award.

“This weekend really represents what BSI Racing is about,” said Shea Holbrook, Owner of BSI Racing. “We have Bobby fighting for a championship, Ellie, Julian and Christian continuing to develop within the series, and now Lanie, Spencer and Gianni coming into MX-5 Cup from completely different racing backgrounds. Whether a driver is coming from Spec Miata, GR Cup, TA2 or ARCA, we want BSI to be a place where talented drivers can continue learning, competing and taking that next step in their careers.”

The VIR weekend continues BSI Racing’s long-standing commitment to driver development and the Mazda racing ladder. The organization enters the event as the reigning 2025 Mazda MX-5 Cup Team Champion while simultaneously competing across Mazda MX-5 Cup, Toyota GR Cup and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge competition.

For Gossett and the No. 44 team, VIR represents another important opportunity to close the championship gap. For the remainder of BSI’s seven-car lineup, the weekend is another opportunity to learn, compete and demonstrate the depth of talent developing under the BSI tent.
